Consent to Participate

Welcome to the CARE Study! Before we get started, please read the consent information that follows.
Who can participate?
You are eligible to participate if you:
  • Have worked as a schoolteacher in the past 12 months (any grades, K-12) in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, Alberta, or British Columbia
  • Can answer the survey in English

Why are we doing this study?
We want to understand what it is like for teachers in today’s political climate. We want to understand how teachers support their students’ needs, and any barriers/facilitators that impact them. We also want to explore how teachers respond to support or resistance from parents, community, or others in relation to classroom content or curriculum.

Who is funding this study?
This study is funded by The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

Your participation is voluntary!
Your participation is entirely voluntary. You can withdraw from the survey at any time by clicking ‘exit’ or by closing your browser. If you withdraw, we will not be able to remove the responses that you do provide. Most survey questions are optional, except those that determine skip logic. If you leave the survey or complete the survey you will no longer be able to return.

What happens if you participate?
The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. We will ask you questions about:
  • Your teaching background and experience
  • The training, resources, and supports available to you as a teacher
  • Your experience with input from your community
  • Strategies that you use to make your classrooms inclusive
  • Any difficulties or successes you have experienced when teaching challenging topics such as sex education, sexual orientation and gender identity (if applicable).

Is there any way being in this study could be bad for you?
We do not anticipate any direct risks to participation in this study. You will be asked questions about your teaching experiences and experiences of community input. You will also be asked personal and demographic information (e.g., age, length of teaching career). This information could be identifying. We are therefore taking steps to protect your confidentiality, recognizing that a breach of confidentiality could threaten your wellbeing or employment. Read more below.

What are the benefits of participating?
We don’t expect that completing the survey will have any direct benefits to you. However, you’ll help to improve the resources and supports available to teachers – which means that you could benefit indirectly!

Will you be paid for your time?
You will not be paid for your time. However, you will have the chance to enter a draw to win one of 25 $75 gift cards.
How are we protecting your privacy?
Your information will be treated as confidential, meaning we won’t share your individual responses or any identifying information. Your information will be collected using SurveyMonkey. Your data will be stored in Canada; however, SurveyMonkey is a company in the USA. Learn more about SurveyMonkey’s privacy.

Once the survey is closed, we will download the survey responses and store these using a secure storage platform supported by SFU. Only members of the research team will have access to your responses except in the situation noted below.

We will keep your survey responses for ten years. During this time, we may use your responses to answer other research questions related to teacher experiences. Some of these responses may also be used for graduate student research and work. We may also share your de-identified data (i.e., without email addresses or other identifying information) with collaborators for the purpose of conducting similar research projects, in which case, they will adhere to the same privacy protections as our SFU team.

The survey includes a number of open-text responses. To protect your privacy, please do not provide any identifying information, like your name, the names of your colleagues or students, or the name of the school where you work.
How are we using study results?
Findings from the study will be shared widely with policymakers, researchers, educators, school administrators, and others working in education-related fields. A range of approaches will be used to share findings, such as reports, infographics, academic journals, presentations to decision-makers, etc. If you would us to share findings with you, you have the option of providing your email address.
