Purpose: This survey is designed to gather detailed feedback from trail users regarding their experiences, preferences, and satisfaction with trails facilities maintained by mountain biking associations. The insights collected will be used to enhance trail management, improve user satisfaction, support trail activities in the region, and advocate on behalf of increased support for trail stewardship.

Description: You are invited to complete an online survey that includes questions about your recreation preferences, awareness of trail stewardship and management, community engagement with local trail associations, and any perceived barriers to involvement. Completing the survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Potential Benefits and Risks: There are no direct benefits to you from participating in this survey. However, your feedback is valuable in shaping the future of mountain biking initiatives in the community. There is a minimal risk that some questions may cause discomfort. You have the option to skip any questions you prefer not to answer.

Confidentiality: The survey is anonymous. No personally identifiable information will be collected. Please avoid providing any details that could inadvertently reveal your identity. Responses will be aggregated for analysis and reported only in summary form.

Data Management: This survey is administered using SurveyMonkey, an online platform. SurveyMonkey’s servers are located within and outside of Canada, and thus, the data you provide would be subject to SurveyMonkey’s data management and privacy policies. It is not protected by Canadian privacy legislation and may be accessed by the foreign government in accordance with its/their laws (see https://www.surveymonkey.com/mp/legal/privacy/?ut_source=footer). We will download the responses to a password-protected computer and delete them from the survey platform within one month after completion, which I expect will be April 2025. All survey data not included in the research products will be deleted at the end of the project, approximately August 2025.

Use of Research Information: The findings from this survey may be used in reports, presentations, and publications to share insights with local stakeholders, including community groups and policymakers as well as academic journal publications and conference presentations. Aggregate data will be analyzed, and no individual responses will be identified.

Participation and Withdrawal: Your participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw from the survey at any point before submission by closing your browser. Once you submit your responses, withdrawal will not be possible due to the anonymity of the data.

Concerns: If you have any concerns about your treatment as a research participant, please contact the Vancouver Island University Research Ethics Board at reb@viu.ca or (250) 740-6631.
