Introduction and consent

Thank you for your interest in participating in this survey conducted by Claudette Russell, the Researcher (cruss090@uottawa.ca) and Gordon Betcherman, the Supervisor (gordon.betcherman@uottawa.ca or +1-613-562-5800 ext.2568) from International Development and Global Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ottawa.

The purpose of the research is to collect information from the children of Caribbean migrants. These Caribbean migrants left the region for countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, or elsewhere, years ago.  But their children returned to the Caribbean as adults on their own initiative. In the literature these children are called second generation return migrants. The research will explore whether the migration pattern of second generation return migrants is affecting economic growth in the region. For example, are second generation immigrants working, starting businesses, contributing to the society or the economy, or volunteering in their new home?

If you are a second generation return migrant to the Caribbean, your participation in the research will provide an opportunity for you to share your migration experiences, and in so doing, it will test whether the Caribbean region could benefit from the return of second generation immigrants like yourself; that is, it will help the region better understand the potential for second generation migrants to contribute to growth in the region.

Your participation will involve answering a set of questions about you and your parents, information about your decision to move to the Caribbean, information about your employment status, and information about your experiences integrating into Caribbean life.

The questionnaire should take you about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

You can be assured that all of your responses will be kept confidential and will only be used for the purpose intended. To protect your anonymity, no identifying information will be noted in the final paper or publication of the research. The data collected will be aggregated and presented in a summary fashion.

Your data will be safely stored in a secure manner. Only Claudette Russell and Gordon Betcherman noted above will have access to your information. The data will be retained for a minimum of five years following data collection.

Little to no risks or discomfort is anticipated from your participation in the research. Your participation is completely voluntary. You may choose to stop participating at any time without suffering any negative consequences.

If you have questions about the research, please feel free to contact Claudette Russell or Gordon Betcherman.
