Project Introduction
The False Creek Community Mapping project is an initiative led by the False Creek Friends Society and the Georgia Strait Alliance that seeks to bring together community knowledge and lived experience with existing scientific and historical data to tell the story of False Creek through an interactive, accessible online community map. The mapping tool will explore the many social, cultural, historical, and ecological layers of False Creek, while highlighting opportunities for stewardship and ongoing climate action in the area. We believe that mapping the diverse human and ecological experiences of False Creek offers a unique opportunity to explore how False Creek can serve as a "safe harbour" from the impacts of climate change.

Advisory Circle
We want this project to be guided by the people that are most connected to and affected by the issues it explores. To do this, we will bring together an Advisory Circle of community members who will help shape the project. The Advisory Circle will bring together people with diverse experiences and connections to False Creek, including but not limited to: Indigenous community members, shoreline residents, liveaboard residents, seniors, youth, environmental stewards, and other community members with relevant lived experience, knowledge, or perspectives.

The Advisory Circle will help ensure that the project reflects community priorities and produces tools that are accurate and useful. Specifically, the role of the Advisory Circle will be:
  • Provide guidance on engagement design (who’s missing, how to reach them).
  • If possible, attend mapping events.
  • Help interpret emerging themes from mapping events.
  • Identify gaps, tensions, and blind spots.
  • Advise on community map usability, tone, and accessibility.
  • Support ethical considerations (representation, consent, cultural context).
  • Act as connectors into their communities.
Advisory circle members will meet with the project team approximately 4-6 times during the project, which is expected to run from Fall 2026 - Fall 2027. The tentative meeting schedule includes two meetings in Fall/Winter 2026, three meetings throughout Spring and Summer 2027, and a final draft map review meeting in Fall 2027. Meetings will likely be held on Thursdays or Saturday afternoons at the Museum of Vancouver.

Participation will be compensated via
honorarium of a minimum of $100 per meeting and additional support (food, transit, hybrid participation options) will be provided.
